Dating exclusively, dating and boyfriend/girlfriend?

these are my definitions, do people agree or disagree?

dating = you can see other people

dating exclusively = you are only dating eachother and it is an agreement, thus, monogamous

boyfriend/girlfriend = simply a title...the reason why i don't think dating exclusively = boyfriend/girlfriend is because it's not the other way round sometimes. some people have open relationships and call them boyfriend girlfriend. heck, don't people have open marriages? polygamy?

i think the main difference between dating exclusively and exclusive boyfriend/girlfriend relationship is that...well, when it's a boyfriend girlfriend, you put a lot more effort into the relationship, you have more rights to be suspicious and questioning, it is more commitment, whereas when it's dating exclusively, it's understood that it's monogamous, but it doesn't have to entail as much effort. does that make sense? it's more for fun but also for safety (stds, etc) and just that you don't want to share....

I think you're analyzing this all a little too much. Call it what you want -- exclusivity, titles, and what people put into their relationship varies.

That's all there is too it. Every relationship is different and what's appropriate (as far as dating other people, effort, and rights, etc.) has to be worked out between the 2 people.

I think the key is communicating what you want and expect, and finding someone who wants and expects the same things.
